As emphasized by the brief, the person we direct our design and our message to is important. Although I had previously looked at SKY as a potential audience, the topic has since been solidified. As we are now basing our work on wildfires, we needed to look at who we could speak to that would create the biggest change.
We started by looking at where wildfires are concentrated. Paige and I worked together on this. We looked at the Amazon, Australia and the US. Paige found that most Australian fires were due to natural causes. The Amazon Rainforest on the other hand is already under a lot of scrutiny and making a change for that area requires a longer and larger campaign, that while valuable, would not benefit from this targeted presentation.
We identified CO2 emission as the biggest contributor to the problem of wildfires, CO2 emission in the air makes natural wildfires exponentially worse and creates a vicious cycle. The wildfire releases even more CO2 and heat into the atmosphere, drying out the trees even more. Dry trees are hollow and essentially become kindling for any accidental fires.
We also looked at Texas as that is the place with the highest amount of CO2 Emissions in the US, however, the governor of Texas is famously not known for listening to persuasions related to climate change. Additionally, he is also known to not be attending the climate change conference. We also were thinking about China and India, looking at them as countries with the 1st and 2nd highest CO2 emission respectively, followed by the US. Unfortunately, neither country's Prime Ministers nor Presidents seemed open to appeals, neither would they understand abstract or aesthetic art.
Paige suggested the governor of the state she is from in the US, California. Thus, to us, it felt like the best area to work with as the changes that could create a difference there could be made with legislation and enforcement of the law by the government. The Governor of California is Gavin Newsom. He is younger than others, he's active on social media, he's reportedly on TikTok. He is also intimately familiar with the destruction that wildfires bring, having had to evacuate people in California, probably having had to leave his own home as well. It feels like he could understand the message we may be communicating.
Alternatively, we were also looking at President Joe Biden, and he may also be open to discussion and suggestions, he also would probably listen to our message. His son, Hunter Biden also reportedly is an Artist, however as wasn't as convincing an audience when compared to Gavin Newsom.
